Diabetic foot ulcer

Education of people with diabetes and healthcare professionals

By: Mölnlycke Health Care, December 16 2011Posted in: Diabetic foot ulcer

There is limited evidence from randomised controlled trials about the value of education in preventing diabetic foot ulcers. However, International guidelines (The International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot, 1999, 2003 and 20076,7, http://www.diabetic-foot-consensus.com) advocate the use of education of people of diabetes. The education should involve simple key messages for the patient.

  • Daily or more frequent visual inspection of the feet and shoes.
  • Check the feet for signs of damage such as cuts, open sores, changes in colour, swelling and heat
  • To seek medical advice urgently should any of the above occur
  • Advice on appropriate footwear
